Time to break down the modal silos in modern transportation. Aviation and surface transportation have people and ideas that can each help the other mode.
At Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meetings in Washington, DC every January, presentations are made that collectively illustrate an opportunity for cross fertilization of concepts.
The surface transportation technology cluster now known as IntellidriveSM, formerly Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII), and the air transportation technology development effort called Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen, formerly called NGATS) each have work in progress that could help the other. There is apparently some work for both in systems for weather forecasting going on at National Center for Atmospheric Research.
